A suburb that never had its own art festival just got five murals, ten installations and more than ninety events in a single weekend. Acomb, a working residential district on the edge of York, England, spent Friday through Sunday hosting AcombFest 2026, the city's first dedicated street art festival, and it pulled in an Australian photorealist who paints strangers with nothing but spray cans.
Ten installations, thirty acts, one weekend
AcombFest runs July 3 to 5, 2026, organized by York's Art Of Protest Projects across 22 venues in Acomb, according to YorkMix. The lineup adds up to more than 90 events: five large-scale murals painted live, ten separate art installations, spray battles, paint jams, and performances from over 30 bands, DJs and other acts. The theme is Returning to Nature, built to fold art, nature and the neighborhood into one program instead of stacking murals up as decoration.
The festival announced a charity partner ahead of opening weekend, per a separate YorkMix report, tying the event to a cause instead of running as a standalone art showcase. The Australian who paints strangers like they're monuments
The headline act is SMUG, born Sam Bates, an Australian-born muralist now based in Glasgow, Scotland. Beyond Walls describes his method: he shoots his own reference photographs, then recreates them freehand at mural scale using aerosol cans only, no projectors, no stencils. His subjects are mostly working-class, everyday people blown up to building size, an argument in paint that ordinary faces deserve the same scale usually reserved for saints and generals. AcombFest's own billing calls him the world's best photorealistic muralist, a claim that gets tested in public every time he works a wall in front of a crowd instead of behind a studio door.
A wildlife painter, a runner-up, and a suburb betting on paint
SMUG isn't working alone. Sheffield-based muralist Peachzz, runner-up for Best Mural in the World in 2024, and wildlife artist Curtis Hylton round out the festival's headline card, per YorkMix's festival guide.
