If you want to watch a whole city hand its walls over to street artists for ten days straight, put MURAL Festival Montreal on your calendar. The 2026 edition is the 14th, and it runs June 4 to 14 along Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the strip Montrealers just call the Main.
What MURAL actually is
MURAL started in 2013 as a way to turn the Main into an open-air gallery every summer. The pitch is simple. Artists paint full building walls in public, in real time, and you stand on the sidewalk and watch a blank wall become a finished mural over a few days. It is free, it is outdoors, and the work does not come down when the festival ends. It stays up, which is why a walk down Saint-Laurent any time of year is already a tour of past editions.
2026 dates and where to go
The 14th edition runs June 4 to 14, 2026. Saint-Laurent Boulevard goes pedestrian-only for the festival, closed to cars from Sherbrooke Street up to Mont-Royal Avenue. That stretch is the whole event. Walk the Main, watch the walls get painted, duck into the shops and food along the way, and come back a few days later to see how far each piece has gotten.
What is new in 2026
This year includes a special mural series built around the 10th anniversary of Dead by Daylight, the horror video game made in Montreal. Local studio, local festival, so the tie makes sense, and those pieces will pull the biggest phone crowds of the week. If you follow the game, that is your reason to plan the trip around the front half of June.
The work stays up
The reason MURAL matters past the ten days is that Montreal kept the murals. Years of editions stacked up across the Plateau and the Main, so the city now reads like a permanent collection that happens to be free and outside. You do not need a ticket and you do not need to time the festival. You just need to walk.
Why a stencil cutter should care
Watching a wall get painted in person is the fastest way to learn how the pros handle scale, layering, and contrast. A lot of large-format mural work runs on the same logic as a good stencil. Reduce the image to clean shapes, plan your layers, commit to the cut. If you cannot get to Montreal in June, you can build the same muscle at home.
