A stencil does not die from spraying. It dies in the ten minutes after, while it sits on the ground with wet paint on it and you go grab a beer. By the time you come back the paint has set into the cuts, the thin bridges are stuck to a sheet of newspaper, and the edge that was sharp on spray number one bleeds and tears on spray number two.
Good mylar will give you a hundred clean pulls. Most people get five. The gap between those two numbers is not the stencil, it is what you do with it when you are done. Here is the whole routine, in order, including the one solvent that looks fine for about three seconds and then wrecks the sheet.
Clean it wet, every time
The single rule that matters most: clean the paint off while it is still wet. Wet paint wipes. Dry paint chips, and chipping is where bridges break.
Aerosol paint skins over in a couple of minutes and is fully set inside fifteen. So the move is to pull the stencil, walk it straight to your cleaning spot, and wipe it down before it flashes off. Lay it flat on newspaper or cardboard, paint side up. Take a rag or a paper towel and wipe from the middle outward, following the direction of the cuts, not across them. Wiping across a row of thin bridges is how you fold one over and tear it.
For most water based and acrylic paints, a damp rag does the job on its own. For solvent based aerosol you will need a little help, and that is where people start reaching for whatever is under the sink. Do not do that yet. One of those bottles will fog your mylar permanently, and I will tell you which one before you ruin a sheet.
If you cannot clean it immediately, do not let it sit dry on a surface. Drop it flat into a tray of water or lay a wet rag over it. That buys you time and keeps the paint from curing into the cuts.
What is safe on mylar, and what eats it
Mylar is polyester film. It shrugs off water and most mild solvents and it hates the aggressive ones. Here is the short list.
Safe: warm water with a drop of dish soap, isopropyl alcohol (90 percent and up works great on aerosol), and odorless mineral spirits for the stubborn solvent based stuff. Alcohol is the one I keep in a spray bottle on the bench. It cuts spray paint fast, it does not haze the film, and it flashes off so you are not waiting around.
The one that wrecks it: acetone. Acetone, and most of the nail polish remover and lacquer thinner that contains it, will cloud mylar, soften it, and over a few cleanings turn a stiff flat sheet into something warped and brittle. It looks like it is working because it strips paint on contact. Then the surface goes milky and the edges start to curl, and that sheet never lays flat again. Same warning for harsh degreasers and brake cleaner. If you do not know what is in the bottle, do not put it on the stencil.

Dry it flat, not hanging
People hang a wet stencil over a line or off a hook because that is what you do with a wet thing. Wrong for mylar. Hanging puts the weight of the water on the bottom edge and on every thin bridge, and a wet bridge with weight on it stretches. Stretch one bridge a millimeter and your registration is off on the next pull.
Dry it flat. Lay it on a towel, paint side up, and pat the surface with a second towel or a paper towel. Do not rub the detail area. Then leave it flat for a few minutes to air off, or stand a fan in front of it. Flat means the film keeps its shape while the water leaves. That is the whole reason you do it.
Flat drying matters, but it is nothing compared to how you store the thing once it is dry, because that is where most stencils actually get killed.
Store it flat. Never rolled, never folded
A crease is permanent. Mylar does not bounce back from a hard fold the way paper sort of does. Once you put a line in it, that line sits a fraction of a millimeter off the wall every time you spray, and paint runs under the gap. On a single layer piece you might not notice. On a multi layer or a halftone, a crease through the detail throws your registration off and there is no fixing it. The sheet is done.
Rolling is the slower version of the same problem. A rolled stencil holds the curl, and a curled sheet will not sit tight against a wall, so you get bleed along every edge that lifts. You can weigh it down for a day to flatten it, but you are fighting memory you put into it yourself.
Store flat. A few ways that work:
- Flat in a drawer, one stencil per slot, nothing stacked heavy on the detail.
- Slid between two pieces of cardboard or foam board, taped on one edge like a folder.
- In a flat portfolio or art folio if you have a stack of them.
- Big ones, taped flat to a wall or the back of a door by the corners.
If you must stack, put a sheet of paper between each one so leftover paint residue does not transfer, and keep the pile somewhere it will not get sat on or buried.
Protect the bridges and the fine detail
The thin bits are the whole game on a detailed stencil. Bridges are the little connectors that hold an island in place, the white of an eye, the gap inside a letter. They are the first thing to tear and the reason a stencil retires early.
Three habits keep them alive. First, wipe along the cuts, not across them, like I said up top. Second, always peel the stencil off a surface slowly and from a corner, low and flat, not straight up. Pulling straight up yanks every bridge at once. Third, when you line it up on the wall, set it down from one edge and roll it flat instead of dropping the whole sheet on at once, which folds bridges under.
If a small bridge does tear, you are not finished. A strip of clear packing tape or thin masking tape across the back, trimmed to the cut with a blade, will hold a broken bridge for plenty more sprays. Tape the back, never the paint side, so the front still sits flush on the wall.
When a stencil is actually done
So when do you throw it out? Not when it looks dirty. A stencil caked in dry paint can still cut a clean line if the edges are intact. You retire it when the function goes, and there are three honest signs.
One: the cut edges have gone soft and furry from paint buildup you can no longer clean off, so the line it sprays comes out blurry no matter what. Two: a structural bridge has torn in a spot tape cannot save, usually right through the middle of the detail. Three: the sheet has a crease or warp that stops it sitting flat, so you get bleed on every pull and registration is gone.
Hit any one of those and it is done. Buildup and grime on their own are not a reason. I have stencils that look filthy and still pull sharp after dozens of uses, because the edges and bridges are fine and the sheet is flat.
